宇文邕天和元年（公元566年），置和戎县，属宕昌郡，故治在今甘肃古浪县古浪峡中。杨坚开皇三年（公元583年），废宕昌郡，和戎县属宕州。

隋大业三年（公元607年），改宕州为宕昌郡。李渊武德元年（公元618年），改宕昌郡为宕州。和戎县属之。

贞观三年（公元629年），和戎县省入怀道县。
