秦汉间（公元前221年至前206年）置，属渔阳郡，故治在今天津市武清区后巷乡大宫城村东侧。北魏太平真君七年（公元446年）移治今武清泗村店镇旧县村，为渔阳郡治所。唐天宝元年（公元742年）改名武清。
