第一届台湾电影金马奖举办于1962年，台湾地区行政机构新闻局主办。“金马”二字，取自台湾海峡前线，台湾省离岛。位于福建省的金门县和马祖地区（台称连江县）。初设奖项时，为纪念台海前线争斗，故以“金马”命名此奖项。
