吕后执政期间，重用自己的弟侄，吕氏集团密谋全面夺取政权，并篡夺皇位。吕后元年（前187）四月，吕后侄子吕平封扶柳侯。公元前180年，吕后死后，忠于刘氏的汉将相断然采取行动，用武力消灭了吕氏集团。吕平即在这次政变中自杀。
